Palo Santo, which translates to “holy wood” or “wood of the saints”, is one of the most fragrant woods in the world. The sweet scent of this mystical tree is related to Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal, and it is considered to be a harbinger of healing and good fortune.
Smudging – is a spiritual practice where you clear your energy fields using a piece of burning Palo Santo or herb bundle, such as white sage. Burning Palo Santo sticks is a sacred practice for those seeking a stronger spiritual connection with the universe. Indigenous communities burn it to cleanse their space and ward off evil spirits, it can eliminate negative energy, creating a calmer, more tranquil space.
Palo Santo is traditionally used as a natural remedy for colds and flu, as well as symptoms of stress. In aromatherapy, it is known to relieve wide variety of physical ailments including asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression, and is a great tool in the process of healing emotional trauma.
Smudging in the summertime provides the additional benefit of warding off mosquitoes in a natural, non-harmful way. Palo Santo contains volatile oils and aromatic resins that work as a warning sign to pesky bugs, but without any harsh chemicals or artificial components.
The harvesting of Palo Santo is very specific. Due to traditional beliefs and the mystical nature of the tree, you can only “use” trees that have fallen down due to natural causes. Trees that are cut down and used to burn do not have the same oils or smell as those sourced ethically. The Palo Santo you should be purchasing should be from the tree-fall, as it is sourced ethically and has its natural properties intact.
At Edge of The Woods, we take pride in making sure our Palo Santo comes from reputable sources. We have it available in a variety of presentations: sticks, incense, oil. Please stop by our 2nd floor and check it out today!
